Please do, as this is in my opinion the best venue for hard electronic in San Francisco, and the infrastructure for much awesomeness being attacked for petty reasons.


My own letter:

I was dismayed to learn about the attack on the DNA Lounge by ABC.

I have been driving from Reno to San Francisco to see shows or attend events - mostly at the DNA - since 1989.

That represents fuel, tolls, parking, cabs, dinners, drinks, taxes, hotel revenue, over the course of nearly two decades.

I am not alone.

As you well know, out of state tourism and entertainment are critical components of your economic mix. Jobs across the spectrum of support depend upon this revenue.

Far from "a disorderly house injurious to the public welfare and morals", the DNA represents a valuable cultural and economic resource that should be preserved, not attacked for the sloppiness of one or two events promoters working with them, or the actions of their patrons.

The only conclusions I see that can be drawn from the situation are:

1. The DNA is the victim of excessively strict and punitive regulation out of touch with reality. If so, they aren't the only business so burdened.

2. The DNA is being shaken down for power or profit by someone in the regulatory structure. If so, they aren't the only business so burdened.

In either case, clearly there is a malignant process at work that will cause considerable economic - and public relations- damage, left unchecked.

If this is how California - and in particular San Francisco, the crown jewel of the state - treats its businesses and the tourists they depend upon, you can expect your share of the current recession to be long and deep.
